Boat Safari.

Took a safari after a very long time and took my camera along too. I actually missed my evening bird walk ! I guess I have become addicted to it. I just that I gives me an opportunity to be on my own and to do my own thing . The safari was enjoyable in its own way and got to see some elephants and a little birding as well. Took some photographs which I reproduce below.

Migrants from across the high mountains.

Yesterday I went for my usual bird walk in the evening and decided to also cover the river side beyond our Reading Lounge.I was hoping to confirm the presence/absence of migratory waterfowl , Northern Pintail & Garganey in particular. I had not seen them so far this season and felt that I might get lucky on this stretch which, I had not covered for some time.

It was quite late when I did finally reach the stretch but the light was still good . I saw a bunch of water fowl flying and alighting in a depression near the river bank. And I thought I spotted a couple of Pintails in the lot.The migratory waterfowl are quite shy in these parts , being easily spooked , and I had to be carefull while approaching them . I crawled up and hid behind some bushes overlooking the river and spent a lot of time observing them through the binos. Northern Pintail & Garganey were confirmed.

After a while I got up and headed back towards the resort. The light was now fading fast and I was in a hurry to get back. In the fading light I saw a bunch of large birds not far from me, the colour and shape of which were unfamiliar and I therefore stopped to take a look through the binos. I was not prepared for what I saw. Bar Headed Geese - seven in all - standing just a few yards from me. This was the first time I was seeing them in my life . I never expected to see them here in Kabini.

Bar Headed Geese are migratory waterfowl that winter in India. They fly across the high Himalayas to reach us. They have been recorded close to Mysore and in the Nugu backwaters which is about ten to fifteen km as the crow flies from Kabini. However I have never seen them in Kabini itself.

I was not carrying my camera and therefore could not take a photograph. This morning me and my colleagues tried to find them but in vain. I am going to make another attempt this evening and hope to get lucky again.

Tusker & the Fishing Net !

I have been away for an unusually long time and the reason being that I have put away my camera for the time being and have picked up my binoculars instead. Yes, I have been doing a lot of birding, every evening , and have not gone into the Park for a very long time. I also find my twitter account more convenient for posting birding updates.I am afraid this state of affairs will continue for at least till the end of this year and I therefore request you to follow me on twitter if you wish to keep in touch with my birding. I am using my twitter a/c exclusively for birding updates.I am also contributing my finding to a Citizens Science project called Migrant Watch. For more information log onto

http://www.migrantwatch.in

Coming back to this post. This morning my friend Nawaraj was witness to a bizarre scene being played out in the backwaters. An elephant ( a tusker ) entangled in a fishing net. I have previously posted photographs of a Woodpecker that had got entangled in one and of a Python that was killed by one. This time the tusker managed to untangle himself. The ending may not have been so happy if a young calf had got caught in deep water. Just goes to show the damage fishing with nets can do in wildlife areas. All of us who feel that fishing is non - intrusive and can be allowed in wildlife areas as a dual use policy need to do a serious rethink.

All photographs by Nawaraj.

Winter Visitors.

Have been doing a little birding every evening for the past three days and the following winter visitors have been recorded.

1.Common Sand Piper
2.Grey Wagtail
3.Brown Shrike
4.Richards Pipit
5.Greenish Warbler
6.Barn Swallows
7.Eurasian Golden Oriole

The last few evenings have been very pleasant. The resort is filling up for the Diwali week so I am going to keep myself busy birding in the evenings rather than go on safari with the crowd.

" Ours " versus " Theirs " .

An interesting article that has generated a lot of heat in an online forum.

http://churumuri.wordpress.com/2009/10/11/why-our-nagarahole-scores-over-ranthambore/

The writer is a well known and well respected journalist from Mysore. He has written a very factual and interesting book on the life of Veerapan ( the infamous bandit of the South ).I have read the book and can vouch for the painstaking research that must have gone into it.

Coming back to the article in question - I quite agree with the gist of it ie. that the wildlife experience in the south and Nagarhole in particular is far more unpredictable ? ( can not find the correct word to describe it ) and therefore much more thrilling because of it.The last paragraph is unfortunate but does bring to light the overcrowding of the parks in North and Central India and also the stage managed Tiger Shows that are conducted from elephant backs there.

I have never visited Ranthambore, Kanha or Bhandavgarh but I must confess that because of what I have read and heard about them they are not high on my list of Parks that I wish to visit. Please note that I have mentioned " not high " I will definitely visit them someday but given a choice I would go elsewhere .

Before I sign off I would like to add that while I consider all Wildlife areas in India and abroad as " ours " I also definitely consider Nagarhole to be " my " National Park for obvious reasons. ( I live and work here for god's sake ! )

Cheetah reintroduction.

The Cheetah reintroduction has been approved by the MoEf. As far as I am concerned this is good news and I will be following this closely. For more details please follow the link below.

http://www.wti.org.in/current-news/091007_MoEF_approves_cheetah_reintroduction_roadmap_preparation.html

The one point that many will jump upon is the fact that African Cheetahs will be used , but as the article says -

"Dr Stephen J O’Brien, world’s leading conservation geneticist and Chief of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), USA, had clarified that there is no significant genetic difference between the African and the Iranian cheetah."

However I dont think we have heard the last of this and will try and dig out some more information on the subject.

Indian Wildlife Week.

We are in the middle of the Wildlife Week which is a unique event in the world. It was initiated about fifty years ago by the Ministry of Agriculture and has caught on well. It is now organized by the Forest Departments in India. The seriousness of celebrating Wildlife Week is not only to educate young people like school children but also to correct the flaws in the conservation effort by the government. The key to global wildlife conservation in the 21st century must be to craft solutions that meet the specific requirements of each species and its specific circumstances.

It is celebrated every year around this time (October 2 to 8) by governments, environmentalists, activists to accelerate the awareness of wildlife conservation among people. India, being a mega-storehouse of various species, is also able to manage several conferences, awareness programmes, public meetings among the nature lovers. But it lasts only for a week. After that the concern over wildlife is relegated to the backburner, or the mandate to conserve the wild species is given to the NGOs or self-claimed conservationists.

The Value of a Tree.

A tree that lives for 50 years

Generates Rs 5.3 lakhs worth of Oxygen

Recycles Rs 6.4 lakhs worth of fertility and soil erosion control,

Creates Rs 10.5 Lakhs worth of air pollution control,

Provides Rs 5.3 lakhs worth of shelter for birds and animals,

Besides providing flowers, fruits, and lumber worth Rs 4.5 lakhs

So, when even one tree is cut, the city loses nearly Rs 32 Lakhs.

Think before you cut a tree!

Tara ' s Birthday & International Tiger Day.

Today is my daughter Tara's birthday and also International Tiger Day which is a happy co-incidence. Infact these are not the only coincidences with regard to my daughter. I always wanted to name my daughter Tara because while I was in school I was very taken with a certain person in Indian history. This was Tara Bai of Mewar. It was also a happy coincidence that Billy Arjan Singh named his tigress Tara and so did Mark Shand name his elephant Tara. And so Tara it was.

Heres hoping that she gets to see as many wild tigers as she wants. She saw her first at the age of four - five ?

A Home for an Owl..

I like owls. I can not explain it but I have a soft spot for them. Luckily we have quite a few owls that can be seen and found around the campus. Every fifteen days or so I get to do night duty which I spend searching for owls.

http://gaur36.livejournal.com/27864.html

When I first came here there used to be a Barn Owl that would come and perch on a tree near the swimming pool. Every night like clock work he would be there. However once the resort started functioning he began to delay his appearance till quite late and unless I was on night duty I would not be able to see him.I started to miss my late evening encounters with him.

It then struck me that perhaps I could induce him to roost and eventually nest on the property. There are very few large trees around the resort and I reasoned that the large ficus near the Reading Lounge would make an excellent home for him. It was large, it was isolated , none of the resort pathways went near it with the result there were no pathway lights to disturb him.To my eyes it was perfect.

The Tree.

Whatever the charms of that particular tree , it was not me who was going to roost or nest there and unless he thought likewise it would be of no use. I therefore decided to tempt him by building him a nice little home - a nest box !I got the design from the net and used some waste wood to get it built.

The Nest Box - face up - the little platform is for the baby owls to get some exercise.

A few clarification before I proceed further.I quote from the write up and design of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust

"'Nest' is not really the appropriate word to use in relation to Barn Owls, since they build no nest as such, but lay their eggs on a layer of pellets which has accumulated in their roosting site. Such sites are deep spacious cavities in trees (especially Elms), dark corners of barns, churches (see: Churchyard Conservation), and old buildings, or even gaps in straw stacks. With the loss of so many elms in recent years through disease, and so many old buildings through modernisation, nestboxes provide a real opportunity for this declining species to re-establish its population.

Owls may accept a nestbox readily, but use it only for roosting for as long as two years before finally breeding. There is no real design for a Barn Owl nestbox - any large box is acceptable if it is at least 18 x 18 x 24 inches. For internal use (barns and old buildings) the traditional tea chest can be ideally adapted; but for external use, good quality, heavy, waterproof board must be used.

The ideal site for a box is a dark corner on a beam in an undisturbed building near farmland, away from busy roads, and where there is permanent access for the owls through doors, windows or other such holes.

An entrance hole 9 x 9 inches should be cut from one of the bottom corners, and a lipped tray fitted in front of the entrance to provide an exercise area for the young owls.

It is also possible to site boxes in modern, prefabricated farm buildings, using battens, bolts and wire, but the need for a permanent means of access to the building for the owls is vital."

We then chose a nice fork in the tree and set up the box, which was not as easy as it sounds. Since it was made of solid wood it was rather heavy and took considerable effort to place it.

Well now all we have to do is wait for him ,or any other owl for that matter, to find it and once he does it will take him a couple of years for him to actually nest there.

Death in the Afternoon.

Some time ago I had described how we were able to save a Woodpecker that had got entangled in a fishing net.

http://gaur36.livejournal.com/100922.html

Unfortunately a few days ago we arrived too late to save a Indian Rock Python .Pythons like to swim and this one swam right into this net and could not get out. It may be surprising to know that a fishing net can kill such large animals, but I have seen huge crocodiles killed by these nets. The Forest Department is not taking this seriously right now and we see fishermen operating within the Park with impunity. They brazenly go about their business in their coracles right in front of us making no attempt to hide. So much for the oft repeated argument that wildlife tourism acts as a watchdog against poaching !

For my part I managed to get this highlighted ( along with these photographs )through an article in the local press. How effective that will be is anybody's guess.

Yesterday I got a sinking feeling when I came across this dead Gaur floating in the water. I have no idea how it died but I can not help but fear the worst.

Cheetah - reintroduction in India.

There has been a lot of talk recently of reintroducing the Cheetah in India and as is usual with a project such as this we have been subject to a long list of divergent views. This was to be expected for we, as a people, are extremely argumentative and opinionated. However one line of argument caught my attention – that the Cheetah was never a native of India but were feral African Cheetahs imported by the Princely (specifically Muslim or Mughal) families for sport. This was definitely a new one for me and so I decided to see if there was any merit in this argument.

My own knowledge of Cheetahs in India is non existent or very sketchy, gleaned mostly from whatever was written about them. However I have always been fascinated by them and I still have a print of the famous painting of hunting cheetahs by Stubbs. Everything in the painting is wrong – the way the handlers are dressed, the terrain depicted in the painting and also the quarry or the prey. That painting illustrates the gaps in our knowledge of the cheetah.

It seems that confusion is more or less synonymous with the Cheetah., the same often being confused with the Leopard and even sharing the same names in certain areas. For example in Gujarati the words 'chito' (singular) and 'dipdo' (singular) are interchangeably used for panther (Panthera pardus) though shikaris with a keen eye would perhaps have used the words with discretion, using only the word “dipdo' for a panther and 'chito' for a hunting leopard. However in some regional languages had/have a distinct name for cheetahs e.g. Bengali "Kendua Bagh", Telugu "Chita-puli", Kanada "Chircha",and "Sivulgll".Abul-Fazal Aliami uses thewords 'yuz' or 'cita' in his Ain-I-Akbari . There was even much confusion among British naturalists and sportsmen for a long time, in spite of the fact that they were far more accurate as a rule, about the animal denoted by the word panther, leopard and hunting leopard.

Even the classification and nomenclature of the Cheetah has had a confused history as with many other species. As late as 1929 this animal was classified under the Latin name Cynailurus - dog-cat - and it is so referred to in technical literature, e.g. Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society Vol. XXXIV. It was referred to as Cynaefelis - also dog-cat - as well because of the opinion held by many that the animal in question was an intermediate species connecting the dog and cat families (Pocock, 1976)Similarly, the number of sub-species of the Cheetah have also been in doubt. At one time it was believed that there was the African Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus), the Transcaspian Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus raddei), the Asiatic Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venatlcus) and the King Cheetah(Acinonyx jubatus ) Today, however, the position seems to have settled down as follows cheetahs from Africa, south of the Sahara are probably best considered to be of one sub-species, Acinonyx jubatus jubatus, the name currently used for cheetahs north of the Sahara and those in Asia being Acinonyx jubatus veneticus - The Asiatic sub-species is similar to the African but is slightly smaller according to Salvador & Florio (1978).

However I seem to have digressed a bit. We were discussing whether the Cheetah was a native of or was introduced into India This argument seems to have it origin in two sources. The first being the absence of identifiable mention of the Cheetah in Sanskrit literature i.e. before the Muslim invasions of the sub-continent and the second being the fact that import of cheetahs from Africa had become a regular feature among the Princes by 1927.

I find the argument that the import of cheetahs in this century from Africa is evidence of the animals being imported in earlier times whose progeny went wild subsequently to be extremely weak. Let us take a closer look at the historical records that we have at our disposal.

Akbar is recorded as having devised a new method of trapping cheetahs in the wild in India and also of training them at his court for hunting. This supposes that older methods existed and that the Cheetah was found wild in India. Akbar is also known to have had 1000 cheetahs at one time in his menagerie and Mutamad Khan records that in his lifetime Akbar had collected 9000 cheetahs .Now if these animals were collected in one reign alone it would have resulted in a flourishing and lucrative import trade which would not have gone unnoticed in the various chronicles. In fact, there is no mention of import trade of cheetahs in the Akbarnama, Ain-1-Akbari or Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri .Thus this confirms not just the presence of wild Cheetahs in India but also give us a fair idea of their numbers in the wild.

On the other hand it was found that the Cheetah was very difficult to breed in captivity. When one pair did bred in captivity and produced three young it was precisely recorded by Emperor Jahangir and by Mutamad Khan in his Iqbalnama. It was obviously a matter of joy to the Emperor since the event was so rare and Mutamad Khan considered it to be "among the curious events" that occurred during the reign of Jahangir. Under such circumstances it is difficult to contemplate that the Cheetah was prolific enough to multiply rapidly and successfully to the extent that it was found all over the sub-continent in a feral state even if it was imported by the early Muslim invaders of India, say 300 years before the Mughals arrived on the sub-continent.

Sanskrit literature is notorious for its descriptive inaccuracy, ask any scientists working to identify roots, fruits, flowers, leaves, etc, for ayurvedic medicines. When one tries to identify animals and birds one is on equally slippery grounds. A recent study of flora and fauna in Sanskrit literature (Banerji, 1980) records 50 species of animals with more or less accurate identification including seven species of domestic animals. Prater (1980) on the other hand records 136 species of animals (not including domesticated ones and marine mammals) found on the sub-continent. If one is to accept the proposition that cheetahs were not found in India before the Muslim period on the basis of their not being identifiably recorded in Sanskrit literature, one can also reach the conclusion that some 90 species of animals known to us to-day were imported by the Mughals or their successors. Further, according to the same study, the word Dvipl could denote a Tiger, Leopard and Snow leopard. The word Harina (also Mrga, Kuranagama, Rsya, Nyanku Ena) could denote any member of the deer and antelope family found in India .The Lion, on the other hand, is referred to as Simha, Mrigendra, Mrgadhipa, Mrigaraja, Hari and Kesrin. It is quite clear that accurate identification of any animal, leave alone the Cheetah in Sanskrit literature would be very difficult if not impossible.

So we can conclude that the Cheetah is or was indeed native to India. It would be quite interesting to find out more details of its range within the country. To all purposes it should have been the same as the range of its main prey ie the Chinkara. It is supposed that the Chinkara was its main prey and not the Blackbuck and thus the Cheetahs distribution would have mirrored that of the Chinkara more than that of the Blackbuck. This range included areas of Sind, Gujarat, Punjab, Rajputana, Central India and Deccan and as far south as Mysore.

A glance at the written records of various individuals, both British and Indian, give us a representative record of the Cheetah’s range in India over the last hundred years or so. Forsyth, writing in 1889, states that he had come across and shot cheetahs 'several times' in Central India. Russell (1900) records having seen five cheetahs in August 1882 in Berrambadie forest of Mysore district, of which he shot one. He also records that the animal was not seen to be numerous anywhere though it was more common in Jaipur and Hyderabad. G.O. Allen (1919) states that he saw in 1916 the skin of a Cheetah killed by villagers 30 miles south of Mirzapur. Only five animals were recorded in 25 years prior to that in the region. R.G. Burton (1920) states that he never saw a Cheetah in the wild. In one instance he saw tracks in Buldana district of Berar. He records seeing three skins of animals shot in Melghat forest. One was shot at Damangao in 1894 and one in 1895. He quotes Buchanan Hamilton, who believed the Cheetah to be found all over the hilly parts of India but numerous only around Hyderabad. Sir Montague Gerard told Burton that he had ridden and speared cheetahs in Central India. Raj Kumar (later Maharaja) Sardulsinghji of Bikaner shot three Cheetahs out of a bunch of five seen by him in Rewa state around 1925.L.L. Fenton (1920) records that in Bombay Presidency Cheetahs occurred in limited numbers in the Kathiawar province. In 17 years of his stay in Kathiawar he had heard of only nine cheetahs. Two were shot by "natives" in Chotila two by S.A. Strip of Wadhawan Garassia School at Wadhwani and of the remaining five cheetahs, one each was speared by Mr. Waddington, Principal,
Rajkumar College, Rajkot, and himself, and three were dispatched by other officers. In the same vicinity the late Maharana Raj Saheb Sir Amarsinhji of Wankaner shot two cheetahs between 1900 and 1910 (Y. Digvijay Sinhji, 1984). J.M. Richardson (1929) shot a specimen in Chindwara district, and was informed by the Commissioner of the Division that for 50 years a Cheetah had not been reported in those parts. R.C. Morris (1935 ). The last record of cheetahs in the wild in India is of 1948 when the ruler of Korwai state (wrongly referred to as Korea in the Journal of Bombay Natural History Society) senselessly destroyed three of them while these animals were transfixed in strong headlights at night. With such a wide range it is difficult to believe that the Cheetah was introduced into India.

We now come to the question of reintroducing the Cheetah in India. I personally feel that it would be a good idea in theory. However a lot of practical problems need to be sorted out for the project to be a success.

First we need to get breeding pairs of the animal. The cheetahs to be reintroduced must be of the Asiatic variety which are now restricted to parts of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the U.S.S.R. These places are difficult to access and even then the low number of Cheetahs surviving in these areas could be a hindrance in sparing any for relocation.

If the Asiatic variety are not available should we reintroduce (or introduce) the African species? This is a contentious issue with questions of racial purity etc creeping in. The words “racial purity ‘can bring to the fore emotions not necessarily connected with wildlife conservation.

Divyabhanu Sinh, a knowledgeable naturalist and the nearest we have to an expert on Indian Cheetahs feels that there should not be any reservation in introducing the African sub-species on the purely , as he himself puts it , pedantic ground of racial purity for the simple reason that all known sources point to very minor differences between the two sub-species. He however makes certain valid points which are as follows and in his own words.

“Surely, the African sub-species would adapt to differences of habitat quickly and efficiently Cheetahs are known to adapt themselves to a wide range of climatic and Geographical conditions. Their eating habits can be vastly different as well. In Iran they are recorded as preying on Urial, Ovis orientalis (Schaller 1977). Prey animals of the Cheetah are predominantly the gazelle and antelope. Both these have practically disappeared along with our grass lands and the forests of the plains from the sub-continent. They survive in protected areas and they are none too plentiful. For the sake of their survival, new areas must be set aside first, preserved and stocked with prey
animals before cheetahs can be introduced so as not to expose existing parks and reserves to experiments with possibly unexpected results. In other words, precisely those conditions have to be recreated in large tracts of land, the disappearance of which caused the demise of the Cheetah in the first place, before we try to reintroduce the animal. Initially, artificial feeding may be necessary but it must be stopped at the earliest possible. One would hate to see the spectacle of a lion show resurrected in a new garb. All this requires an attack on two fronts. First a proper management study of the project would be required in consultation with the best experts in the field. This may not be an insurmountable problem, for expertise can always be bought from anywhere on earth. Second the successful execution of the project would require management skills and dedication of the highest order in our bureaucracy, both of which appear to have been sadly lacking in our experiment in transplanting Indian lions from the Gir in Gujarat to Chakia near Benares in U.P. some 20 years ago ”

As I mentioned before we are an argumentative and opinionated people and many more innovative arguments will be made for and against the reintroduction of the Cheetah but my personal opinion ( that word again ! )is that as long as we can find the right area as described above we should give it our best shot even with African Cheetahs !

Common Bronzeback Tree Snake.

This one was on my wish list. I had first seen it a few years ago when I was with Kaplia but was not able to photograph it .This morning it was seen on a wall near my office and I managed to get some good photographs.

On the wall.

On the ground.

The Monsoon.

The monsoon is the time when most wildlife areas in the country are closed to visitors .Most wildlife photographers put away their equipment and wait for the Parks to re-open after the monsoon. Most if not all the wildlife photographs that we get to see are taken during the dry season . The result is that most people are unaware of the total transformation that takes place during the monsoon.Lucky for us the Parks in Karnataka are open through out the year . I am now trying my hand at capturing the beauty of the monsoon in Kabini.

Still and Moving Pictures.

I am busy uploading some more video clips to my You Tube account. Finally doing so after a gap of almost three years. A variety of issues prevented me from doing so earlier. This will be the last time I will be doing so as I no longer shoot video. Please do follow the link on left column of this journal to my You Tube account to watch the same. Uploading is in progress and will take at least a week to complete.

Went on a Boat Safari yesterday and got a few nice photographs .

The End of the Game - The Last Word from Paradise.

Recently a friend of mine called Pamela recommended this book to me. I have still not been able to get my hands on a copy but I really like what I see. Written by a remarkable person called Peter Beard this is what he has to say.

" When I first went to Kenya in August 1955, I could never have guessed what was going to happen. Kenya's population was roughly five million, with about 100 tribes scattered throughout the endless "wild—deer—ness" - it was authentic, unspoiled, teeming with big game — so enormous it appeared inexhaustible.

Everyone agreed it was too big to be destroyed. Now Kenya's population of over 30 million drains the country's limited and diminishing resources at an amazing rate: surrounding, isolating, and relentlessly pressuring the last pockets of wildlife in denatured Africa.

The beautiful play period has come to an end. Millions of years of evolutionary processes have been destroyed in the blink of an eye.

The Pleistocene is paved over, cannibalism is swallowed up by commercialism, arrows become AK- 47s, colonialism is replaced by the power, the prestige and the corruption of the international aid industry. This is The End Of The Game over and over.

What could possibly be next? Density and stress — aid and AIDS, deep blue computers and Nintendo robots, heart disease and cancer, liposuction and rhinoplasty, digital pets and Tamaguchi toys deliver us into the brave new world."

Here is a short biography.

Born in 1938 in New York City, raised in New York City, Alabama, and Bayberry Point, Islip, Long Island, Peter Beard kept diaries at an early age. He took his first pictures at twelve and photography quickly evolved into an extension of his diaries, as a way to preserve and remember vacations and favorite things. In 1957 he entered Yale University as a pre-medical student, but perceiving humans as the main disease soon switched to art history, studying under Vincent Scully, Joseph Albers, and Richard Lindner.

Trips to Africa in 1955 and 1960 piqued his interests and after graduating from Yale, he returned to Kenya via Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) in Rungstedlund, Denmark. She was the author of Out of Africa, Shadows In the Grass, Gothic Tales and Mottos In My Life. Beard met Blixen through his cousin Jerome Hill. In the early 60s he worked at Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, during which time he photographed and documented the demise of over 35,000 elephants and 5000 Black Rhinos and published two The End of the Game books (1965 & 1977). During this same time period, he acquired Hog Ranch, the property adjacent to Karen Blixen’s near the Ngong Hills and made it his home base in East Africa. Beard has written further works on his African experience: Eyelids of the Morning: The Mingeled Destines of Crocodiles and Men(1973), Longing for Darkness (1975), and his most recent books Zara’s Tales: Perilous Escapades in Equatorial Africa (2004) written for his daughter and his latest book Peter Beard, published by Taschen in November 2006.

His first exhibit was at the Blum Helman Gallery In New York in 1975 and was followed in 1977 by the landmark installation of his photographs, elephant carcasses, burned diaries, taxidermy, African artifacts, books and personal memorabilia at the International Center of Photography (his first one man show) in New York City.

In addition to creating original artwork, Beard has befriended and collaborated on projects with many artists including Andy Warhol, Andrew Wyeth, Richard Lindner, Terry Southern, Truman Capote, and Francis Bacon.

In 1996, shortly after he was skewered and trampled by an elephant, his first major retrospective opened at the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris, followed by other exhibits in Berlin, London, Toronto, Madrid, Milan, Tokyo and Vienna. He now lives in New York City, Montauk Point, and Kenya with his wife Nejma and daughter Zara.

This is probably the first time that I have pushed books on this blog but this is one book that has made me stand up and take notice. Take a look by following this link.

http://www.taschen.com/lookinside/05711/index.htm

Monsoon Magic.

Yesterday I got another opportunity to take a safari in the small jeep. I had five guests with me, they were nice people but as an insurance policy I asked Narendran to do the guiding.

It was an overcast day with a hint of rain, not really ideal weather for photography, but an ideal monsoon day – everything lush green , the forest in all its splendour but no rain ( I hate getting wet – as a Tea Planter I have spent enough time in wet clothes to last two lifetimes ) . To bring out this monsoon effect I decided to incorporate the habitat between myself and the subject – what most photographers call clutter. However I had to use higher ISO which my camera does not take very well.

Here are the results.I was not really successful with the Spotted Deer but got lucky with the rest.I hope you like them. For me the Leopard photographs are the best, the forest in all its glory and the Prince himself in a relaxed mood but his presence dwarfed by his kingdom.

Gateway to Paradise.

The first to be seen , but not quite there yet.

Success !

Eye to Eye !

Wide Angle ?

The Prince in his realm.

Bored with the attentions of his subjects.
